Lilies

Lilies provide a stunning display in the summer garden with many providing fantastic scent and stunning colours. They can be grown directly in the garden or arranged in pots and will happily come back year after year increasing annually in their numbers.

Pests and diseases affecting Lilies

Though quite resilient Lilies can suffer a few problems if not planted in the correct conditions.

Basal Rot

If planted in poorly draining soil they can be affected by basal rot, which cannot be treated and will cause the top growth to wilt whilst the base will rot away.

Botrytis

This can occur where there is poor air circulation around the foliage or excessive moisture. Can be kept under control with a suitable fungicide from garden centres and by increasing air to the plants foliage.

Lily Beetle

A very destructive pest attacking Lilies and Fritillaria, eating through the leaves and flower buds. Easily identifiable bright red beetle found on the leaves. When threatened the lily beetle will just fall off the plant to escape. Their eggs are attached to the underside of the leaves and look like black blobs of sticky stuff. An appropriate treatment from Garden Centres will control rather than eradicate this pest.
