Alkaline soil
Soil that has a pH of between 7.5 (slightly alkaline) and 14 (highly alkaline) is described as Alkaline with a pH of 7 being neutral.
It is easy to check your soil pH with a testing kit available from Garden Centres, which involves mixing a soil sample from your garden with and included chemical solution and reading the colour chart provided.
If your soil is Alkaline you will not (with a few exceptions) be able to grow Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Heathers and a variety of other acid loving plants and you will be more prone to potato scab.
