Landkey - How it Began

In September 2007 a group of year 6 children decided it would be a good idea to take the large piece of land behind the infant playground and make use of it. The ground was over grown with bramble weeds and long grass. It is always referred to as the ‘sensory garden’ however the only thing sensory about it was that if you dared to enter you would most certainly be stung by stinging nettles and pricked by the brambles. The ground also slopped steeply and was as hard as a rock.
The children discussed a number of possible uses including an adventure playground. Eventually it was agreed that they should turn it into a real sensory garden and so ‘gardening club’ was formed. Children between the ages of 5 and 11 now go to gardening club after school every Thursday and many of the children choose to spend a lot of their lunch times gardening.
