Anyone growing figs(figus carica)in pots.  I bought one a month ago, potted on in J.I.3 and has been outside in last weeks rain.  Must have put on 3” of growth and looking very healthy.

Also have a fig tree outside in all weathers; been there for twenty years and produced one decent fig.  There is however competion from other fruit trees, mainly Bramleys, Laxtons Superb and Granny Smiths.  A sunnier sight would be a help.

I have one in a pot FF, it’s been doing very well last couple of years, has had plenty of figs on but none ripened yet, it seems better if you get them on late, overwinter them and then they ripen fully the following year

I agree Plug this seems to work but it does depend on your location.  The one I had which if I remember correctly was Black Turkey and it never ripened.  A friend of mine who lived down in a sheltered part of the village had a very old one that produced fantastic harvests every year.

I have just taken one ripened fig off and it was beautiful and sweet, it had to be carried over from last year though

Bet that was truely a moment to savour Plug, but such a long wait.

There are many fig trees growing in gardens in our area, well established, and with no attention from their owners seem to fruit very freely.  One huge specimen ‘Brown Turkey’ is on a high wall facing south-east at the end of a supermarket car park. It’s got masses of fruit that will be ready back end......!

Mine, both pot and garden are not showing any sign of producing this year ...yet.

Leaves are just starting to fall.  I hope the fairly small figs will develop on next year.

With all the warm wet weather this Summer there has been a lot of growth.

Not exactly the hot sunny conditions figs like so much.

Any pruning tips would be appreciated..... there’s a lot of new growth.

Thanks for that Plug

If your fig is in a large pot like mine, do you leave it outside all Winter, put it under glass or bring it indoors ?

I have another fig planted out amongst some apple trees; never seems to put on much growth and seems tolerant to the odd frost.  Not that it gets so cold down here these last few Winters.

I did put mine in a cold greenhouse last winter, it is in a tub, I think I’ll do the same this winter and then maybe plant out next year
